Open House, Mission Trip and Bill Rucks weekly update

Hope your week is off to a good start – it appears the hot summer weather we have dodged up to this point has arrived! Hopefully the heat and humidity will help the crops in the field! Stay cool and safe. Let’s get this weekly update rolling:

First of all, tomorrow night – Tuesday July 14 – is our Next Steps Phase One OPEN HOUSE from 6-7:30pm. Come on out and see our renovated children’s ministry space in the northeast basement area and The Edge, a student ministry space, in the south basement. Refreshments will be served in the Fellowship Hall and ministry staff will be spread throughout the building to answer any questions about this process.

Two FCC leaders have really gone above and beyond when it comes to this project – a huge thank you to Mark Behrends and Dana Korneman! These two have spent countless hours at FCC working, serving and leading – blessings to each of you!

Second, this Sunday brings our annual HS Mission Trip – this year to Acuna, Mexico, working with Casas Por Cristo and former FCC YM Scott DeWitt. Adam is leading this team of HS students and adults, and the trip will take place from July 19-25. Please lift up our team in prayer!

Third – thanks to Cody Monkman for an excellent message yesterday during week 4 of the Daniel Plan. I’m so thankful for all of our staff at FCC, and was moved by the entire service yesterday at FCC. Way to go Cody and everyone involved in the service!

Finally, this morning I have the honor of leading the funeral for Bill Rucks, longtime Mt Pulaski High School basketball coach. Bill’s story is very interesting – he was the first seven foot basketball player in Illinois history, and yet upon graduating from Illinois in 1976, he landed in tiny Mt Pulaski and never left. Bill almost died in 2009 and despite his recovery, he was physically limited for the rest of his life.

However, instead of sitting around his house and feeling sorry for himself, Bill made the most of the life situation he found himself in. Bill ran for school board and was elected, and served the MP school district. Despite being confined to a motorized chair, Bill returned to the basketball court, serving as an assistant coach at MPHS the past three seasons. He spent a lot of time w/ my son Peyton one-on-one the last year plus, something I’ll never forget!

Why do I share all of this? It is a reminder for all of us to the very most of the opportunities the Lord gives us. Are you serving the Lord? Are you contributing to your church and to the Kingdom? Are you finishing well?

Have a great week – see you Sunday!
